Disk Defragmenter is a utility in Microsoft Windows designed to increase access speed by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguos storage locations, a technique called defragmentation. Defragmenting a disk minimizes head travel, which reduces the time it takes to read files from and write files to the disk. Disk Defragmenter also reduces system startup times.

Hence defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the mass storage device (Hard Disk) used to store files into the smallest number of fragments. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation.
